As an American-Maltese writer, I was happy to have been contacted by IHRAM Press to read & review their anthology ‘The Feminine Voice of Malta’. What got me excited about the anthology was specifically that it was full of Maltese writers. There are millions of books around the world but only a handful that create space for Maltese writers. IHRAM Press is an international movement, launching multiple anthologies in the near future about many different countries. What struck me in this anthology is that each “leħen”, each voice, is talking about the societal issues women face with no subtleties - anger, frustration & sadness are direct in these voices. A married woman is attracted to a young man, yet must deal with her post-breast cancer body. A woman describes her mother’s dementia. Another deals with the impacts of the patriarchy, how not being allowed to play a game of football means much more than society would admit. What I enjoyed the most was having English and Maltese side by side in this anthology. And that new names were included - this anthology really is making waves in the Maltese literary scene.
