Wei Jingsheng is a Chinese human rights activist who is known for his involvement in the Chinese democracy movement. He is most prominent for having authored the essay "The Fifth Modernization", which was posted on the Democracy Wall in Beijing in 1978. Due to the manifesto, Wei was arrested and convicted of "counter-revolutionary" activities, and was detained as a political prisoner from 1979–93. Painting by Tom Block
Jacqueline Moudeina is a Chadian lawyer and human rights activist, who is known for her work in bringing Hissène Habré to justice for crimes against humanity, as well as those who worked with him. Painting by Tom Block
Albanian Refugee: In 1999, more than one million ethnic Albanians either fled Kosovo or were forcibly removed by Serbian troops. Though neighboring states sheltered most, like this woman in Macedonia's Stenkovec refugee camp, arrival in refugee camps was just one more step in a treacherous journey. Painting by Tom Block
What people are saying
“The International Human Rights Art Festival is based in inclusion, honesty and sincerity - and brings together artists who will stand proudly before an audience and open their hearts, exposing their struggle in whatever arena they feel most challenged.”
— Broadway World
“All of the work is sincere, beautiful and often very raw. It takes art to its highest level: At that knife’s edge between pain and beauty. Here, resides truth. Here can be found the answer to the anger and divisions in our society.”
- Huffington Post
“Activist artists are not the center of the American culture, but we’re at the center of the American soul,” Block says. The artists involved echo Block’s passionate belief in activist art as an essential core of both who we are as Americans and what we aspire to become as we continue to build towards an ideal society.
