Meet Kitty Stryker
Introduction writer to upcoming release, “Solidarity: A Celebration of Activism, Renewal, and the Natural World”
Kitty is a queer writer, anarchist activist, humble servant to two lovely boy cats, and authority on curating consent culture in alternative communities, living in Berkeley, CA.
Having long been an advocate for consent culture, Kitty has written and published numerous works on the subject, including a workbook, designed to help people explore consent in their own way, and at their own pace. Her most recent book ‘Love Rebels: How I Learned to Burn It Down Without Burning Out’ with Thornapple Press, delves into the intricacies of balancing devoted activism with personal relationships. In both a call to action and memoir, Kitty breaks down how to best advocate for causes the reader believes in.
Kitty understands the exhaustion that can come with activism. The fear of losing everything you have to give, upsetting those closest to you, the sinking in your stomach when you hear news that laws have been passed against your very existence. Writing the introduction for Solidarity, Kitty points directly to this weariness, refusing to romanticize activism or Solidarity.
“Yes, acting in solidarity with others is hard. It asks a lot of us in terms of self-awareness, humility, and responsibility. It nudges (and yes, sometimes kicks) us out of our comfort zone.”
By pointing directly to the spaces that make us uncomfortable, we are able to move through them together, instead of shying away from them alone. Kitty reminds us that solidarity is not about getting it perfect, rather showing up, doing what we can, and learning as we go.
“ But solidarity is also kind. It reminds us that we are growing, that we aren’t born getting everything right, that intention isn’t magic, but it does count for something if you commit to learning from it.”
We are honoured to have her voice open this collection, her introduction not only sets the tone, but models the very practice of the writers within, show up, be honest, do what you can, let your voice be heard.
